The 68RFE low reverse sprag is commonly known to flip its dog bone sprag struts and fail. The industry has marketed and sold for many years what others call a “billet”, “heavy duty”, “upgraded”, “formula one”, “high performance”, “metal”, “spring and roller clutch” and various other terms. In reality, all of these sprags are not much of an improvement and to some degree worse than the factory dog bone sprag.
The other upgraded sprags or roller clutches use a 45RFE low roller clutch and cut the top off of it to fit into the 68RFE external race and machine the inner race to fit. While this does provide a roller clutch assembly it also a poorly designed and executed. In many cases its failure will cause catastrophic failure. By machining the top of the plastic roller housing, you eliminate the support where the rollers push against the cage. When subjected to abuse, this cage which is made of phenolic plastic will buckle and the roller clutch will explode. When this happens the entire gear train is usually destroyed and a whole new core is needed to rebuild the transmission. If the factory dog bone fails, there is no other damage caused to the geartrain as they simply flip and will not apply versus an explosion on the aftermarket designs. To sum it up, you’re better off leaving a stock dog bone sprag in the unit versus installing one of these aftermarket “upgraded” designs. You ask, how do we know all of this? We used to use this part ourselves and have seen what happens. We needed a real solution, not a ticking time bomb.
